There are 99 private universities currently running their educational activities with the permission of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the country. The number of total private universities is 109, the other eight universities have not started running educational activities yet.
The UGC has issued a public notice on Thursday targeting the students who want to get admitted to private universities.
The notice asked admissions students to be careful about being admitted to several universities.
UGC has identified various problems in 26 of the universities where educational activities are conducted. Among the universities, some have conflict over ownership, some are running courses outside the permitted ones, some are operating despite court stay orders, some universities have some campuses without approval.
UGC advised students to be admitted only in government and UGC-approved campuses and programs in the notice.
The notice asked the admission students, their parents and all concerned to visit the UGC website (www.ugc.gov.bd) to be ensured about the number of seats commissioned in the approved campus and approved program of the approved university.
The UGC has also advised not to get admitted in universities that have not had a vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer appointed by the president for more than six months.
The notice also said that the UGC will not take responsibility for students enrolled at any private university, campuses, programmes or courses with no permission from the commission.
Nine of the 98 universities conducting educational activities have all the three top positions, vice-Chancellors, pro-VCs and treasurers appointed by the president.
69 universities have vice-Chancellors, 22 have pro-VCs and 56 have treasurers appointed by the President. There is no person in the top three posts appointed by the President in 18 of them.

IBAIS University, America Bangladesh University, Queen's University, The University of Cumilla, Asian University of Bangladesh, TIMES University Bangladesh, Southern University Bangladesh, Gano Biswabidyalay, Primeasia University, University of Development Alternative, Daffodil International University, Victoria University of Bangladesh, Southeast University, Sylhet International University, Cox's Bazar International University, ZH Sikder University of Science and Technology, Pundra University of Science and Technology, Britannia University of Comilla, North-South University, Rupayan AKM Shamsuzzoha University, Ahsania Mission University of Science and Technology, Shah Makhdum Management University, Khulna Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah University, Microland University of Science and Technology, and newly approved Sheikh Hasina University of Science and Technology in Kishoreganj.
Darul Ihsan University has been closed in compliance with a court order.
