Heavy rainfall and upstream hill torrents have caused the water level of the Teesta River at Dalia point in Dimla upazila to flow 5 centimeters above the danger mark, inundating several low-lying areas.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Water Development Board (WDB) Dalia Division, the river’s water level rose to 7 centimeters above the danger mark at 6 am on Wednesday, before receding slightly to 5 centimeters above the danger mark by 9 am.
Nurul Islam, gauge reader at Dalia point, confirmed the measurements, adding that the water began rising on Tuesday night following heavy rain.
Acting chairman of Purba Chhatnai Union, Hafizur Rahman, said water from the Teesta has been increasing since Wednesday morning, flooding char villages and other low-lying areas.
Chairman of Tepakharibari Union, Robiul Islam Shahin, noted that residents are living in fear of further flooding, with vast areas already submerged and floodwater potentially entering residential zones at any time.
WDB Executive Engineer at Dalia Division, Amitabh Chowdhury, said there is no cause for alarm, as all 44 sluice gates at the barrage have been opened to manage the water flow.
