The announcement was made by Secretary General Imran Hasan during a press conference held at the Nasrul Hamid Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Monday at 11 pm.
Leaders of the association expressed grievances regarding alleged extortion by government agencies under the guise of campaigns, particularly following a recent fire incident at a restaurant on Bailey Road in the capital.
They accused entities such as the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) of engaging in corrupt practices, citing intimidation tactics and undue pressure on restaurant proprietors.
Imran Hasan, the General Secretary of the Restaurant Owners Association, highlighted concerns over the chaotic situation prevailing in the restaurant sector, attributing it to what they deemed as unjustified actions by various government bodies.
He criticized the abrupt closure of establishments without proper notice, citing violations of government regulations that mandate a six-month notice period for commercial closures.
Moreover, Hasan criticized the complex and time-consuming procedures for obtaining licenses, alleging that they force business owners into resorting to unfair means. The association called for the centralization of restaurant services under a single organization to streamline licensing processes and ensure fairness.
Addressing the issue of alleged harassment and extortion during raids, Hasan condemned what he described as terrorist-like tactics employed by government agencies. He stressed that restaurant owners are being unjustly targeted and coerced.
Osman Gani, President of the Restaurant Owners Association, lamented the treatment of restaurant businesses, citing instances where establishments were abruptly demolished or closed without prior notice, labeling such actions as inhumane.
Gani also criticized the commercial rates imposed on gas, electricity, and water bills despite possessing trade licenses, questioning the rationale behind such practices.
In conclusion, the association called for accountability within government agencies, particularly RAJUK, and urged authorities to address the grievances of restaurant owners to foster a more conducive environment for business operations.
