Trade between Bangladesh and India through the Benapole land port resumed on Monday after remaining suspended for seven days during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, restoring the flow of goods across the country‍‍`s busiest land border.

Port officials said import and export activities restarted in the morning as workers, customs officials and clearing agents returned to their duties following the holiday period.

According to Benapole Port authorities, around 3,000 workers joined operations from early Monday to handle cargo loading and unloading, helping bring the port back to normal functioning.

Commercial activities through the port had remained closed from May 25 to May 31 due to the Eid vacation. However, passenger movement using passports continued uninterrupted throughout the holiday period.

Business leaders said the extended closure led to a buildup of cargo on both sides of the border, but they expect the backlog to ease as regular trade operations resume.

Port data showed that by 11:00 am on Monday, 39 trucks carrying imported goods had entered Bangladesh from India, while 13 trucks loaded with export products had crossed into India.

Officials expressed hope that cargo clearance and cross-border trade would return to normal pace over the coming days as businesses work to process accumulated shipments.
