The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh has filed a case against former national cricket team captain and ex-MP of Magura-1 constituency, Shakib Al Hasan, along with 14 others, on charges of embezzling funds through share market manipulation.
ACC Director General (Prevention) Md. Akhtar Hossain confirmed the development to reporters on Tuesday. The case was filed by ACC Assistant Director Sajjad Hossain.
According to the case statement, Shakib and the other accused collectively manipulated the share market and misappropriated approximately BDT 257 crore.
The incident marks a significant turn in Shakib’s career, as he was once a brand ambassador for both the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) and the ACC itself—two institutions tasked with ensuring financial transparency and integrity.
This is not the first time Shakib has faced penalties related to the stock market. In September of last year, BSEC fined him BDT 5 million (50 lakh) for his involvement in share manipulation.
The other 14 accused named in the ACC case are Md. Abul Khayer alias Hiru, Deputy Registrar of the Department of Cooperatives, Kazi Sadia Hasan, Abul Kalam Madbor, Kanika Afroze, Mohammad Bashar,Sajed Madbor, Aleya Begum, Kazi Fuad Hasan, Kazi Farid Hasan, Shirin Akhter, Javed A Matin, Md. Jahed Kamal, Md. Humayun Kabir and Tanvir Nizam.
The ACC has alleged that the group worked in collusion to manipulate share prices for personal gain, ultimately causing significant damage to the financial market.
