The price of sugar is going to be hiked by Tk5 from February 1, less than two months before Muslims community’s biggest religious ritual month-long fasting in holy month of Ramadan.
Although sugar is a widely used commodity of this countrymen, the consumption of this item will skyrocket like the previous years in the holy month scheduled to be start from March 21.
From February 1, the loose sugar will be sold at Tk 107 per kg, while packed sugar will be sold at Tk 112 per kg.
According to the Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association, the decision was made after considering the price of sugar on the international market, the dollar exchange rate, and the production expenses of local refining mills.
The association said in a press release on Thursday (January 26) that before taking the decision it also discussed the matter with the commerce ministry and the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission.
Earlier, the government fixed the prices of loose and packaged sugar at Tk 102 and Tk 108 per kg respectively.
