Trade Halted at Benapole Port Amid Indian Minister’s Visit

Trade between Bangladesh and India through the Benapole land port will be suspended for two days, resuming Monday, in connection with Indian Home Minister Amit Shah‍‍`s visit to Petrapole port for the inauguration of a new passenger terminal.

Rashedul Sajib Najir, deputy director of Benapole land port, confirmed the suspension, which will affect trade on Saturday and Sunday. Despite the halt in goods movement, Imtiaz Bhuiya, officer-in-charge of Benapole Immigration Police, assured that passenger transit for those with passports remains unaffected.

Kamlesh Saini, manager of Petrapole port, added that the inauguration ceremony, initially planned for October 24, was cancelled due to inclement weather. Typically, Benapole sees a daily movement of 400-450 import trucks and 200-250 export trucks.

In recent days, trade through the Hili Land Port was also temporarily suspended for six days due to Durga Puja celebrations.

Key goods imported from India through Benapole include raw materials for the garment and pharmaceutical sectors, industrial chemicals, and food products. Bangladesh’s exports include jute products, ceramics, fish, and garments.
