Dhaka University marks 101st founding anniv

Once dubbed as the Oxford of the East, the University of Dhaka on Friday is celebrating its 101st founding anniversary with much fanfare enthusiasm and festivity.

The authorities chalked a series of programmes to celebrate the Dhaka University Day, including discussion and rally.

DU Vice Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the celebration by releasing pigeons and balloons at the central grounds at 10:00 am. He also cut a cake there marking the university's glorious journey. Earlier, teachers, students and other employees of the university came to the venue with processions from the residential halls.

The university started its journey with just 877 students in three faculties and 12 departments in 1921.

It has played a vital role in Bangladesh history. The students and teachers of the university had sacrificed their lives in the Language Movement in 1952, the Mass Upsurge in 1969 and the Liberation War in 1971.

Even the national flag of Bangladesh was first hoisted at Bot Tola on the Dhaka University campus on March 2, 1971.
