A Colombian military aircraft carrying more than 120 personnel crashed shortly after takeoff near the country’s southern border, leaving at least 66 people dead and many others injured.

The C-130 Hercules plane went down moments after departing from Puerto Leguizamo, a remote area near Ecuador and Peru, scattering burning debris across a jungle region.

Military sources said the victims included dozens of soldiers, along with air force members and police personnel on board.

Initial reports had put the death toll lower, but officials later confirmed a significant rise as rescue efforts continued and more casualties were identified.

Authorities said dozens of injured survivors were being treated and evacuated, though operations were complicated by the remote location and limited airport facilities.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The area where the aircraft went down has recently seen increased military operations targeting armed groups and drug trafficking networks.

Images from the scene showed wreckage engulfed in flames as local residents gathered near the crash site.

Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a tragic loss for the nation, while President Gustavo Petro described the crash as a “horrific accident.”

Officials said 114 troops and 11 crew members were on board at the time of the crash.

The C-130 Hercules, a widely used military transport aircraft, is known for its ability to operate in challenging environments, including short and unprepared airstrips.
