Thirty-three Bangladeshi nationals have returned home through the Benapole land port after completing jail sentences in India.

They were handed over to Bangladeshi immigration authorities at the Benapole check post on Sunday evening.

According to Syed Mortaza, officer-in-charge of Benapole Immigration Police, the individuals had entered India without valid documents about three years ago in search of work, reportedly with the help of brokers.

They were later arrested by Kolkata police and sentenced by a court to three years in prison for illegal entry.

After completing their sentences, Indian authorities transferred them to the Benapole border, where they were received by Bangladeshi officials.

Benapole police subsequently handed them over to a representative of a Jashore-based human rights organisation to facilitate their return to their families.
