Japan has decided to send an Election Observer Mission to Bangladesh to support the fair and transparent conduct of the country’s general election scheduled for February 12.
The mission will stay in Bangladesh from February 9 to February 14 and will be led by Watanabe Masato, a former Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh.
According to the Japanese government, the team will include officials from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh, and an external election expert.
During the visit, the mission will observe the voting process as well as the counting of ballots. Members of the team will also exchange views and information with the Bangladesh Election Commission and with election observer missions from other countries.
Japan said the observer mission is being sent as part of its support for strengthening democracy in Bangladesh, following the Election Commission’s decision to welcome international observers.
