JCD blocks Shahbagh again demanding justice for Shammo’s murder

The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the BNP, once again blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka demanding justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a JCD leader from Dhaka University.

The blockade began around 3:30 PM on Tuesday when JCD activists took position at the busy Shahbagh crossing, bringing traffic to a standstill.

A large number of demonstrators chanted slogans such as “We demand justice for Shammo’s murder” and “Why is the killer free while my brother lies in the grave?”

Earlier on Sunday, the organization had also staged a blockade at Shahbagh for nearly two hours, protesting what they described as negligence in the investigation and calling for the immediate arrest and trial of the real perpetrators.

At that time, senior JCD leaders accused Dhaka University authorities of failing to ensure student safety and demanded the resignation of the Vice Chancellor and the Proctor.

They also warned of a mass protest at Jamuna if the government shows reluctance in ensuring justice.

Shahriar was a student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at Dhaka University (academic session 2018–19) and served as the Literary and Publications Secretary of the JCD unit at Sir A.F.

Rahman Hall. He was fatally stabbed last Tuesday night near the open stage of Suhrawardy Udyan.

Critically injured, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

His brother later filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station in connection with the murder.
