National University VC attacked over auto-pass demand

In Gazipur, the Vice Chancellor of the National University, Professor Dr. A S M Amanullah, was attacked on Wednesday (May 21) by students demanding an "auto-pass." The incident occurred around noon in front of the university’s administrative building.

According to Mostafizur Rahman, acting director of the university’s public relations office, students from the 2022 bachelor (pass) program gathered at the university’s main gate, demanding automatic promotion without examinations.

As the vice chancellor was entering his office, a group of students surrounded him. Among them, some individuals disguised as students allegedly launched a sudden attack, causing minor injuries to the VC.

He stated that there had been several earlier attempts to disrupt the campus in the name of the auto-pass demand.

However, due to the firm stance of the university authorities, the bachelor (pass) exams were successfully held, with 69% of students passing.

Considering the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and political instability, grace marks were already awarded to this batch to help them pass.

Additionally, they were also given an opportunity for re-evaluation of their answer scripts. Despite this, some failed students—reportedly provoked by various groups—launched this unexpected and disgraceful attack on the VC.

The official further emphasized that the National University will not approve auto-passes for any batch under any circumstances. He confirmed that legal action will be taken against those involved in today’s attack by identifying and filing cases against them.
