At Pabna Government Edward College, the name of the "Suchitra Sen Student Hostel" (Suchitra Sen Chhatrinibas) has been changed to “July–36 Student Hostel” (July 36 Chhatrinibas).
Additionally, names of two other dormitories previously named after family members of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina—who was ousted from power following a mass uprising—have also been renamed.
The college principal, Abdul Awal Mia, officially inaugurated the new nameplates for the three student dormitories Tuesday afternoon.
The event was attended by Vice Principal Abdul Khaleq, Teachers’ Association Secretary Lutfur Rahman, department heads, and other faculty members.
The other two dormitories renamed are: "Sheikh Russell Hostel" (Sheikh Russel Chhatrabas) now called “Bijoy–24 Student Hostel” (Bijoy–24 Chhatrabas) and "Begum Fazilatunnesa Hostel" (Begum Fazilatunnesa Chhatrabas) which has been renamed “Ayesha Siddika (R.A.) Student Hostel” (Ayesha Siddika (R.A.) Chhatrabas)
Suchitra Sen, the legendary Bengali film actress, was born and raised in Pabna. The removal of her name has drawn criticism from her fans and admirers, many of whom have voiced their protest on social media.
