Bangladesh US joint military exercises this summer
Bangladesh and the United States will conduct three joint military exercises this summer as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation in addressing regional security challenges and reinforce their longstanding defense partnership.
According to a press release issued by the US Embassy in Dhaka on Sunday (20 July), the exercises—titled Tiger Lightning, Tiger Shark, and Pacific Angel—will take place between July and September.
The embassy noted that these military engagements, along with the addition of a new unmanned aerial system (UAS) capability, will further solidify shared security objectives and make the region more secure and resilient.
Tiger Lightning
Held for the fourth consecutive year, Tiger Lightning is a joint exercise between the Bangladesh Army and US Army Pacific. It focuses on realistic training involving counterterrorism operations, peacekeeping, jungle warfare, medical evacuation of casualties, and countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The goal is to enhance the readiness and coordination of both forces in crisis situations.
Tiger Shark
A part of the "Flash Bengal" series, Tiger Shark is a joint special forces training exercise that has been ongoing since 2009. It includes patrol boat operations and marksmanship with short-range weapons. Participating units such as Bangladesh’s Special Warfare Diving and Salvage (SWADS) and Para Commando Brigade will train alongside US counterparts, using American military equipment to sharpen their operational effectiveness.
Pacific Angel
Returning to Bangladesh for the fourth time, Pacific Angel highlights the strategic defense cooperation between the two nations, with a focus on the C-130 aircraft fleet. The exercise emphasizes aerial delivery and transport missions during disaster response operations, as well as search and rescue (SAR) and aeromedical activities—key areas for strengthening Bangladesh’s humanitarian assistance and disaster relief capabilities.
RQ-21 UAV Program
In addition to the exercises, the US is working with the Bangladesh Army and Navy to develop a new unmanned aerial system (UAS) capability. A joint regiment composed of army and navy personnel will operate the newly introduced RQ-21 Blackjack system.
According to the embassy, this collaborative initiative will enhance Bangladesh’s ability to conduct maritime surveillance, ensure border security, and support peacekeeping operations more effectively.
