Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Ronen Bar, the head of the country’s internal security agency, Shin Bet, for failing to anticipate the deadly Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
The move came after growing criticism of Israel’s intelligence agencies for not detecting signs of the attack in advance.
The decision was officially approved by Netanyahu`s cabinet in a meeting on Thursday evening, with the entire cabinet voting in favor of Bar’s dismissal.
Ronen Bar, who had been serving as Shin Bet`s chief since October 2021, was initially appointed to a five-year term.
However, his role was brought under scrutiny after the attack by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group.
The attack led to the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis, and 251 others were taken hostage.
Israel responded swiftly with airstrikes, launching heavy bombardments on Gaza in retaliation for the attack.
Bar’s final day in office will be April 10, marking an end to his tenure after the government deemed him responsible for failing to prevent one of the deadliest assaults in Israel’s history.
Following the Hamas assault, Israel’s strikes on Gaza have resulted in a significant loss of life.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, more than 48,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the conflict broke out.
The ongoing conflict has left both sides grappling with heavy casualties and a tense situation that shows no signs of resolution.
The dismissal of Israel’s top security official highlights the intensity of the situation and reflects the government’s efforts to respond to public outcry over the handling of the crisis.
