Narges Mohammadi has remained one of Iran’s most prominent rights campaigners despite years of imprisonment, health problems and separation from her family.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner was recently released on bail and taken to a hospital in Tehran after supporters raised concerns about her health.

Mohammadi received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her long campaign for human rights, including opposition to the death penalty and compulsory hijab laws in Iran.

She has spent much of the past two decades in and out of prison on national security charges.

Her family, including her husband and twin children, now lives in exile in Paris. Her children have not seen their mother for more than 10 years.

Mohammadi has continued speaking out against Iran’s ruling system even while in prison.

Supporters say she was arrested again last year after attending a funeral without wearing a hijab and criticising the government.

Rights groups, including Amnesty International, have described her as a prisoner of conscience and called for her release.

Despite her health condition and repeated arrests, Mohammadi has vowed to continue her campaign for freedom and democracy in Iran.
