Monsoon rains and flash floods have claimed more than 100 lives in Pakistan over the past month, with authorities warning that another spell of heavy rainfall is expected later this week, raising concerns of further flooding.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Monday that 109 people have died across the country since June 26.
Most of the fatalities were caused by collapsing houses and roofs, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province recording nearly half of the deaths.
The latest update came a day after the disaster management authority reviewed the country`s flood preparedness measures amid the ongoing monsoon season.
During the meeting, officials discussed plans to strengthen early warning systems for communities living along rivers, enabling residents to relocate voluntarily or be evacuated before floodwaters reach their homes.
Heavy rain battered several parts of Pakistan last week, including the eastern city of Lahore, where flooded streets disrupted daily life and forced commuters to take longer alternative routes.
Videos and images circulating on social media showed residents walking through knee-deep floodwater, prompting criticism over the government`s preparedness and response to the severe weather.
Authorities have repeatedly warned that Pakistan remains vulnerable to extreme monsoon conditions and have not ruled out a repeat of the catastrophic floods of 2022.
The 2022 disaster inundated nearly one-third of the country, killed 1,737 people and displaced millions.
