WhatsApp has introduced voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web, allowing users to make audio and video calls directly from their browser without using the desktop app.
The new feature was rolled out on Tuesday, enabling users who access WhatsApp through a web browser to place both voice and video calls without installing the standalone desktop application or using any additional tools.
The update also introduces a call transfer feature, allowing users to seamlessly switch an ongoing call between their mobile device and WhatsApp Web or the desktop app without disconnecting. The person on the other end of the call will not experience any interruption, as the audio or video conversation will continue smoothly during the transfer.
To improve group call management, WhatsApp has added a waiting room feature. Hosts will have greater control over participants joining group calls via invite links. When the "Require approval to join" option is enabled, new participants will first be placed in a waiting room. They can only join the call after the host reviews and approves their request. The feature also gives hosts more time to prepare before admitting participants.
Another addition is Quick HD, which provides high-definition video from the beginning of a call. Video quality will automatically be optimized without requiring users to enable any additional settings.
The update also includes noise suppression, a feature that reduces background sounds such as traffic noise, chatter, or the hum of a fan, making users` voices clearer during calls. The feature can be turned on or off directly from the call screen as needed.
WhatsApp said the new update is being rolled out gradually and will become available to users worldwide in phases.
