Sheikh Hasina, the Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh has been residing in a secure location within New Delhi’s Lutyens Bungalow Zone, which was facilitated by the Indian authorities, according to a media report by ThePrint.
In accordance with her position, she is accommodated in a spacious Lutyens bungalow usually designated for ministers, senior MPs, and high-ranking officials. To maintain her privacy and security, ThePrint has chosen not to reveal her exact location.
On August 5, ousted Sheikh Hasina fled in India and sought refuge.
Sources have indicated that Hasina follows established security protocols and occasionally strolls in Lodhi Garden.
“She benefits from an extensive security detail, with personnel monitoring her continuously while in plain clothes. Being a dignitary warrants this level of protection,” stated a source.
“She has been in this vicinity for over two months now, with all provisions for her stay organized here.”
It has been reported that Hasina and a few aides landed at Hindon airbase on a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft late on August 5, shortly after her resignation, which followed violent protests that led to more than 400 deaths.
However, she departed from the airbase within two days. Upon her arrival, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and senior military officials greeted her at the airbase.
“She couldn’t remain at the airbase for long due to insufficient arrangements. Thus, just a few days later, she was moved to a secure residence in the protected region of Lutyens’ Delhi,” a second source clarified.
This area is notable for its stringent security and is home to numerous former and current Members of Parliament.
When inquired about her movements, a source commented, “The core security team is informed as necessary, and arrangements are made accordingly.”
Although the Indian government has not officially notified the Bangladesh government of Hasina`s location, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned in Parliament in August that Hasina had requested permission to travel to India “for the moment.”
ThePrint tried to reach out to the Ministry of External Affairs for commentary and will update the report when a response is received.
On her flight to India, Hasina was accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana, a British national whose daughter, Tulip Siddiq, is a leader in the Labour Party in the UK. It remains uncertain if Rehana is living with her sister.
In addition, Hasina’s daughter, Saima Wazed, who currently serves as the Regional Director for the Southeast Asia Region at the WHO’s Delhi Headquarters, also resides in Delhi and is the first Bangladeshi to hold that title.
Last week, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), which Hasina established in 2010, issued arrest warrants for her, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, and 44 others over alleged “crimes against humanity” tied to the student protests that led to her ousting.
The tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, released these commands following petitions from the prosecution. Reports suggest that over 60 allegations of crimes against humanity and genocide have been lodged against Hasina and other senior Awami League figures, with the tribunal mandating the detention of the 46 individuals to bring them before the court by November 18.
