British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced he will step down as leader of the Labour Party, triggering a leadership contest that will determine the United Kingdom‍‍`s next prime minister.

The announcement comes less than two years after Labour returned to power with a commanding victory in the 2024 general election, ending more than a decade of Conservative rule.

In a statement outside Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said he would remain as caretaker prime minister until the party elects a new leader. He acknowledged growing pressure from within Labour and accepted that many colleagues no longer believed he was the best person to lead the party into the next national election.

Starmer‍‍`s decision follows months of political turbulence, declining approval ratings and increasing criticism of his government‍‍`s performance on a range of domestic issues.

Attention has now turned to the race to succeed him, with Andy Burnham emerging as the frontrunner. The former Greater Manchester mayor recently secured victory in a special parliamentary election, strengthening his position ahead of the leadership contest.

Burnham has long been viewed as one of Labour‍‍`s most influential figures and has increasingly been seen as an alternative voice within the party.

Speculation over Starmer‍‍`s future intensified in recent days as pressure mounted from Labour lawmakers and party supporters seeking a change in leadership.

If a new leader is elected in the coming weeks, the United Kingdom will have appointed its seventh prime minister in just over a decade, underscoring the political instability that has characterised British politics in recent years.

For now, Starmer is expected to oversee day-to-day government business while Labour begins the process of choosing its next leader and, ultimately, the country‍‍`s next prime minister.
