Keir Starmer has said he will remain Britain’s prime minister despite heavy losses for the Labour Party in local elections across the country.

The elections dealt a major blow to Labour, with the party losing support in parts of England and suffering a historic setback in Wales.

Starmer admitted the results were difficult and said he takes responsibility, but stressed that he would not step down.

The biggest gains came from Nigel Farage and his Reform UK party, which won control of several councils and made strong advances in traditional Labour and Conservative areas.

Farage described the outcome as a major shift in British politics and predicted further trouble for Labour.

In Wales, Labour lost control of the devolved government for the first time since the parliament was created, while nationalist party Plaid Cymru emerged as the largest group.

The Conservative Party also suffered major losses, while the Green Party and Liberal Democrats gained additional seats.

Analysts said the results reflected growing frustration among voters over the economy, living costs and dissatisfaction with traditional political parties.

The elections were seen as a key test for Starmer’s government ahead of future national political battles.
