U.S. President Donald Trump has shared that he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone in hopes of ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

He confirmed this conversation during an interview, which was reported by the New York Post.

The interview was published late on Saturday.

In it, Trump mentioned that the conversation took place while he was on Air Force One (the U.S. President’s official plane) last Friday.

When asked how many times he had spoken with Putin, Trump chose not to give a direct answer. Instead, he said,

“It’s probably better not to answer that question.” He added, “He (Putin) wants to see the end of the death of people.”

After the interview was published, Reuters tried to get more details from both the Kremlin and the U.S. government, but neither side responded.

A few weeks ago, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Putin was willing to talk to Trump.

He also mentioned that Moscow was waiting for Washington’s confirmation.

Trump also mentioned on Friday that he plans to talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week to discuss the war’s end.

This February 24 will mark the third anniversary of Russia‍‍`s invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, most of them Ukrainians.

In his interview, Trump said that he’s always had a good relationship with Putin and has a solid plan to bring the war to an end. However, he did not share any further details about his plan.

He concluded by saying,

“I hope it will be quick. Every day, people are dying. This war in Ukraine has had a very bad impact. I want to end this horrible thing.”
