Over 80,000 army personnel to be deployed: Home adviser

More than 80,000 army personnel will be deployed alongside police and Ansar forces during Bangladesh’s upcoming national elections, Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced Monday.

Naval forces, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and other security units will also be on duty.

Speaking after inspecting RAB-10 headquarters, the central jail, and Teghoria High School polling centre in Keraniganj, the adviser said the government had already announced the election, with the date to follow soon.

Preparations are underway to ensure the polls are conducted in a fair, peaceful, and festive atmosphere.

Security forces will use existing body cameras during the election, with plans to procure an additional 40,000 units.

Special booths may be set up to encourage youth participation, as many young voters were unable to cast ballots in previous elections.

Chowdhury stressed that no innocent person should face legal harassment, noting that some cases filed in July and August were driven by financial motives.

On law and order, he said the situation had improved compared to last July, with security forces now more active. While not yet at the desired level, he believes the current environment is sufficient for holding the election.

“Since independence, Bangladesh has never been free of law-and-order issues,” he added.
