U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a letter to Iran`s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressing his interest in engaging in negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
Trump shared this development in an interview with Fox News on Friday.
Trump emphasized in the interview that the U.S. is not seeking to take military action against Iran over its nuclear ambitions.
Instead, he believes that diplomatic talks would be the better option for Tehran.
He also made it clear that, if necessary, the United States would resort to military action to prevent Iran from developing another nuclear weapon.
The U.S. president remained optimistic about the possibility of Khamenei agreeing to discussions soon.
Trump expressed hope that the Iranian leader would take up the offer for talks shortly.
However, Iran’s mission to the United Nations has responded, saying that it has yet to receive any letter from President Trump.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not yet issued any comment on the matter.
This development comes after Iran`s Deputy Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, made a strong statement in response to threats from Israel.
Araghchi asserted that Iran’s nuclear program could not be destroyed by military means, adding that Tehran would not enter into talks with the U.S. under pressure.
