The draft of the new Cyber Security Act-2023 (CSA), which will replace much debated Digital Security Act-2018 (DSA), was approved by the Cabinet on Monday.
The final draft has been updated to include four non-bailable offenses: unauthorized access to sensitive information, causing computer and electronic system damage, cyberterrorism, and hacking.
The act`s draft was reviewed by the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs before being delivered to the Cabinet on Monday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired a Cabinet meeting at her office in the morning.
The cabinet secretary claims that only very small adjustments were made to the draft at the meeting on Monday.
The remaining sections of this draft bill are bailable, but sections 17, 19, 27, and 33 are not. According to the cabinet secretary, Section 17 addresses unauthorized access to crucial information infrastructure, Section 19 addresses harm to computers and computer systems, Section 27 addresses cyberterrorism, and Section 33 addresses offenses and punishments relating to hacking.
An earlier policy decision to replace the contentious Digital Security Act (DSA) with a new "Cyber Security Act" was made at a Cabinet meeting on August 7.
