HC drops Faruque’s petition challenging Aminul’s appointment

The High Court has removed from its cause list the writ petition challenging the legality of Aminul Islam’s appointment as a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The decision came from a bench comprising Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Ainun Nahar Siddika on Monday.

The petition was filed a day earlier by former BCB president Faruque Ahmed, whose nomination as director had been canceled by the National Sports Council (NSC) on May 29.

The next day, the NSC appointed former national cricket team captain Aminul Islam as BCB director in his place.

During the hearing, senior lawyers represented both parties. Faruque Ahmed’s legal team included senior advocate Md. Ruhul Quddus, Kaiser Kamal, and AKM Azad Hossain.

Representing the NSC and BCB were Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman and lawyer Mahin M. Rahman, respectively.

Following the hearing, the court removed the case from its active list, granting the petitioner the liberty to present the matter before another bench. Legal representatives noted that further action will be determined after discussion.

In the original writ, Faruque challenged the legality of the NSC’s decisions on May 29 and 30 and sought a ruling on whether those decisions were beyond legal authority.

He also requested that the decisions be stayed pending the court‍‍`s ruling. The writ named five respondents, including the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Last year, on August 5, following the fall of the Awami League government, the NSC appointed Faruque Ahmed and Nazmul Abedin as BCB directors, replacing Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam. Faruque was subsequently elected BCB president through a board vote.
