The High Court has issued a rule asking why Bhanga Upazila should not be separated from Faridpur-4 parliamentary constituency to form a new Faridpur-5 constituency.
On Monday (22 September), the bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Bishwajit Debnath issued the rule, directing the Election Commission to respond within 10 days.
The petition challenges the final delimitation notification issued by the Election Commission for the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections. The notification placed Charbhadrasan, Sadar Upazila and most of Bhanga Upazila (excluding two unions) under Faridpur-4 constituency. The petition also challenges Section 7 of the Delimitation of Constituencies Act 2021 and Article 125(a) of the Constitution.
According to the petitioners, in 2008 the Election Commission merged Faridpur-4 and Faridpur-5 into a single constituency covering three upazilas. Several applicants had sought to restore the two separate constituencies but were rejected by the Election Commission. Two unions of Bhanga Upazila were also attached to the neighboring Faridpur-2 constituency, which was later questioned by another High Court rule.
The court will further review the matter after receiving the Election Commission’s response.
