Murder case accused escapes from Dhaka court

A murder suspect escaped from the custody of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court on Thursday by assaulting a police officer while being escorted to the court’s detention cell.

The accused, identified as Md. Shariful Islam, 22, is the son of the late Shafik Ahmed from Haripur village in Nawabganj, Dinajpur.

He is a charge-sheeted suspect in the murder case of Jisan Hossain, a 14-year-old boy from the Khilgaon area of Dhaka. The case is currently in the testimony stage.

The escape took place shortly after 11:30 AM at the courtroom of the 3rd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge in Dhaka.

While being transferred from the courtroom to the holding cell, Shariful reportedly attacked police constable Md. Shahidullah and fled the scene.

The in-charge of the court’s detention cell, Sub-Inspector Ripon, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect escaped by physically assaulting the officer in charge.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Prosecution Division, Main Uddin, the accused had been handcuffed but managed to loosen the cuffs using a metal object and eventually freed himself. He then struck the police constable and made his escape.

The police are taking necessary legal action and have notified the Kotwali Police Station to launch an immediate manhunt to apprehend the fugitive. Preparations for filing an additional case regarding the escape are underway.
