The administration has so far seized around 25 lakh cubic feet of illegally extracted stones in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet, officials said on Sunday.

Of the total, nearly 12 lakh cubic feet have already been transported to a designated dumping ground. Restoration work is being carried out in phases, with about 4.5 lakh cubic feet restored so far.

On August 24 alone, 85,000 cubic feet of stones were shifted to the dumping stand, while restoration work was completed for 45,000 cubic feet. Another 8.5 lakh cubic feet of stones remain at the seizure site, where preservation efforts are currently underway.

Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Robin Mia said the drive against illegal stone extraction is ongoing.

“A significant volume has already been recovered, and preservation and restoration activities are in progress. All newly transported stones are being securely stored,” he said.

Authorities said large-scale illegal extraction in and around the Sada Pathor area has been underway since August 5, 2024, prompting intensified operations.

Officials expressed optimism that the preservation and restoration of the recovered stones will aid in environmental protection.
