A case has been filed following the public assault of two young women aboard a launch docked at Munshiganj Launch Terminal.
The incident occurred while the vessel was briefly anchored for a stopover.
The case was lodged this Sunday morning by Milon, a Sub-Inspector of the Muktarpur River Police, at Munshiganj Sadar Police Station.
Named in the case is Nehal Ahmed, also known as Jihad, while 20 to 25 unidentified individuals have been listed as co-accused.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the case falls under Section 10 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
The charges include sexual harassment, unlawful assembly, trespassing, assault, vandalism, damage, and issuing threats.
Nehal Ahmed has already been arrested and shown as detained in the case. Police confirmed that he voluntarily went to Munshiganj Sadar Police Station on Saturday afternoon, after which he was taken into custody. Nehal is a resident of the Jogonighat area in Munshiganj Sadar upazila.
Confirming the case, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Alam of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station told the media around 11:45 AM on Sunday that a video showing the incident had gone viral on social media on Friday.
The footage depicted a man whipping two women with a belt on the deck of the MV Captain launch, as onlookers cheered, filmed the incident on their phones, and chanted slogans.
After the video surfaced, police contacted Nehal and asked him to come to the station.
He complied and was detained. Police also asked the two women and the launch authorities to come forward with complaints, but neither party appeared.
Ultimately, the Muktarpur River Police filed the case on Sunday morning, citing assault, vandalism, and looting aboard the launch.
The investigation will be handled by the River Police, and Nehal is currently being processed for court appearance, OC Saiful added.
