Fugitive death row convict arrested over 1971 crimes against humanity

Abdul Matin (70), who was convicted for crimes against humanity in 1971 and given the death penalty by the International Criminal Tribunal, was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

RAB-3 Staff Officer (Media) Asaduzzaman gave this information in a press conference at the office of RAB-3 in Tikatuli of the capital today. 

This official of RAB said that Abdul Matin was absconding for a long time. This war criminal who joined the Pakistani Army after getting training for the liberation war was arrested yesterday from Golapganj area of Sylhet district.

In 1971, Abdur Matin was charged with 5 crimes against humanity including murder, genocide, kidnapping, torture, looting, arson and rape.

Soon after his arrest warrant was issued in 2016, he went on the run to avoid arrest by law enforcement. Abdul Matin left his home in Pakhiala village under Borolekha thana of Moulvibazar and hid himself in his nephew's house in Golapganj area of Sylhet district. There he introduced himself as a brave freedom fighter.

Matin was involved in the politics of Jamaat-e-Islami from the time of the liberation war until he started his life on the run. This criminal was arrested on the basis of intelligence yesterday night by RAB-3  after hiding in his nephew's house for 7 long years.

Legal action is pending against this arrested accused.
