EC announces presidential election schedule, voting on August 20

The Election Commission (EC) has announced the schedule for the presidential election. EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said nomination papers will be submitted on August 13, while voting will be held on August 20.

He officially announced the election schedule at a press conference held at the Election Building on Thursday.

The EC secretary said the Chief Election Commissioner, in consultation with the Speaker, finalized the election schedule in accordance with Section 5(3) of the Presidential Election Act, 1991. The entire election process will be conducted at the Election Commission’s own premises and the Jatiya Sangsad session hall as per the announced schedule.

According to the schedule, nomination papers for the post of president can be submitted from 10am to 4pm on Thursday, August 13. The nomination papers must be submitted to the office of the election officer. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on Sunday, August 16, from 10am at the Election Commission building. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is Tuesday, August 18, until 4pm.

Voting will take place on Thursday, August 20, from 2pm to 5pm at the Jatiya Sangsad session hall.

Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the voter list for the presidential election has already been prepared. Following the announcement of the schedule, the commission’s administrative activities will proceed accordingly. He added that only the election schedule has been announced for now, and updated information and progress will be formally shared with the media later.

Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. He remained in office even after the fall of the Awami League government following the mass uprising in 2024.

Later, Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from the presidency on July 24. Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is currently serving as the interim president.
