The local administration of Lama Upazila in Bandarban has ordered the closure of 60 tourist resorts located in the Mirinja Range and Shukhia Dukhia Valley due to the risk of landslides caused by heavy and continuous rainfall.

Most of these resorts are situated on hill slopes, making them vulnerable to landslides.

Following an emergency meeting on disaster management, the Upazila Executive Officer instructed that the resorts remain closed to ensure the safety of tourists.

The closure will continue until the heavy rains subside and the landslide risk diminishes.

Meteorological reports indicate that heavy rainfall is expected to persist for several more days. In the past 24 hours, Bandarban recorded 87 millimeters of rain.

Consequently, water levels in the Sangu, Matamuhuri, and Bakkhali rivers have risen but remain below danger thresholds.

However, flooding has occurred in low-lying areas of Baishari in Naikhongchhari Upazila due to river overflow.

Recent incidents related to the adverse weather include a child’s death caused by a fallen tree in Alikadam Upazila and a fatal electrocution in Naikhongchhari during heavy rain.

To manage the disaster, 220 temporary shelters have been set up across seven upazilas in Bandarban.

A coordinated emergency service committee, including fire service, police, health department, volunteer groups, and NGOs, has been established.

Residents living in landslide-prone foothill areas have been urged to move to safer shelters through public announcements.
