LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Agamgir

Local government elections across Bangladesh may begin in phases from September or October, after the end of the current monsoon season, according to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He said the government plans to complete elections for Union Parishads, municipalities, upazilas, zila parishads and city corporations within the next year.

The information was provided on Tuesday, the eighth sitting of the second and first budget session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, in response to a written question from Jamalpur-3 lawmaker Md. Mostafizur Rahman Babul.

The question sought details about the government‍‍`s plans for holding elections at different tiers of local government.

In his written reply, the minister said local government elections could begin nationwide in phases from September or October, following the end of the monsoon season. He added that the government aims to complete elections to Union Parishads, municipalities, upazilas, zila parishads and city corporations within the next year.

He said the elections would be held gradually, subject to the availability of budgetary allocations. Union Parishad elections are likely to be held first, followed by elections to other local government bodies in stages. Elections to all 13 city corporations, including the newly formed Bogura City Corporation, are also expected to be completed within the same timeframe.

The minister said work has already begun on the financial planning required to conduct the elections. Given the substantial funding needed, the necessary allocations have been included in the national budget.

He added that a letter has already been sent to the Election Commission to determine the detailed cost of holding the elections. Once the new fiscal year begins, the Local Government Division, the Election Commission and the Ministry of Finance will jointly begin work toward announcing the final election schedule.
