A man named Danu Mia, aged 40, drowned on Thursday afternoon (May 29) after being swept away by tidal waters in Ghotivanga, under Kutubjom Union in Maheshkhali Upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The incident occurred around 1:00 PM as a result of abnormal tidal activity triggered by a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.
According to local eyewitnesses, Danu Mia was returning home from Ghotivanga Bazaar when he encountered rapidly rising water levels along the route.
Failing to navigate the flooded pathway, he was submerged in the strong current. Nearby residents attempted a rescue and transported him to Maheshkhali Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The deceased was a local resident and the son of Nur Hossain. His sudden death has deeply shaken the local community, who are now fearful of further incidents amid ongoing adverse weather conditions.
