A fourth-year medical student of Kushtia Medical College was found dead in her rented room in Kushtia town on Sunday evening, police said.
The deceased was identified as Samia Nijhum, daughter of Md Abdus Salam of the Chotp Shalikha area in Chatmohar upazila of Pabna. She had been living in a rented room in the Housing E-Block area, close to the medical college.
According to local sources, Samia moved into the room about two weeks ago.
The caretaker of the building, Riaz Uddin, said Samia’s father called in the evening to check on her. When she did not answer the phone, a student from a nearby room went with him and knocked on the door several times. After getting no response, they opened the door with the family’s permission and found her hanging from a window.
Police were informed immediately and later recovered the body.
Principal of Kushtia Medical College Shahidul Islam said Samia was a good student and was expected to complete her MBBS course next year.
Officer-in-Charge of Kushtia Model Police Station Md Kabir Hossain Matubbar said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.
