Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader congratulated independent candidate Zayda Khatun who won the mayoral post of Gazipur City Corporation and said that the people of the country were more happy for free and fair elections being held than they would have been glad if the mayoral candidate of Awami League had won the Gazipur city election.
He congratulated Zayda Khatun on behalf of the party in a rally in front of the central office of Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue today.
Commenting on the victory of democracy in the election, Obaidul Quader said, "One thing has become clear in this election that, BNP has been lying for so long - free, fair and impartial elections are not possible under this government, it has been proven false. Sheikh Hasina fulfilled her promise. Democracy has won more than whether the Awami League candidate will lose or not."
Pointing out that the elections of Gazipur, Narayanganj, Rangpur have been fair, he further said, `The next four city elections and similar national elections will also be fair. It proves that free, fair and impartial elections are possible under the current government.
The bridge minister said that BNP is reducing their votes by threatening to kill Sheikh Hasina.
