Mahmudul Haque, a faculty member of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur who was arrested in connection with a murder case, has been granted bail by the Rangpur Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
The acting judge, Marzia Islam, issued the bail order around 5:00 PM on Sunday, June 22. Mahmudul Haque was released from prison at 6:04 PM. His lawyer, Rokonuzzaman, confirmed the development.
Earlier in the day, a bail petition was submitted to the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1, where a hearing date was initially scheduled for the upcoming Tuesday.
However, considering Mahmudul Haque’s deteriorating health, his legal team filed another bail application in the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court later in the afternoon.
The judge granted his release on humanitarian grounds, pending the submission of the police charge sheet.
Upon his release, Mahmudul Haque was greeted by his wife, Masuba Hasan, his son Maimun Mihran, his lawyers Shamim Al Mamun and Rokonuzzaman, students of Begum Rokeya University, and Shahriar Sohag, former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. He was then transported to the hospital by ambulance for advanced medical treatment.
Lawyer Shamim Al Mamun stated that Mahmudul Haque’s severe health condition was highlighted during the bail hearing, and even prison authorities reported his illness to the court, which influenced the judge’s decision.
Shahriar Sohag expressed relief and excitement upon Mahmudul Haque’s release but demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest and the charges brought against him.
Mahmudul Haque was arrested last Thursday from his residence in Dhap Engineerpara, Rangpur. The case against him stemmed from a murder allegation filed on June 3 by Amena Begum, a resident of Radhakrishnapur Maulvipada in Rangpur, following the death of her husband during the anti-discrimination student movement in August of the previous year.
Mahmudul Haque was listed as the 54th accused in the case. He serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Begum Rokeya University.
