Speaker-CEC to hold meeting Tuesday over presidential election

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will hold a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Tuesday.

Election Commission Secretary Md Jahangir Alam said this on Monday.

He said, “We sought an appointment from the parliament secretariat for a meeting with Speaker. The meeting will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday.”

Earlier, Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman told reporters that everything will be decided in the meeting with the Speaker. The voter list will be prepared after the by-elections in six constituencies set to be held on February 1.

According to the constitution, the President can hold office for five years from the date of assumption of office. The incumbent president Abdul Hamid assumed office on April 24, 2018. So, his five-year tenure will expire on April 23. As per the law, the election should be held within 90 days of the end of the president’s term.
