Teenage girl killed by parents and brother-in-law in Patuakhali

Police in Patuakhali’s Bauphal upazila have arrested a teenage girl’s father, mother, and brother-in-law for allegedly strangling her to death over a love affair.

Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Bauphal Circle) Arif Muhammad Shakur confirmed the arrests at a press briefing at Bauphal Police Station around 8:15 pm on Wednesday.

On August 23, the body of 14-year-old Urmi Islam was recovered from a canal, about a kilometer away from her home in Kumbhkhali village. Following the discovery, her father, Nazrul Islam, filed a case with the police accusing unidentified individuals of killing his daughter.

However, during the investigation, police uncovered the actual circumstances of the murder. On Tuesday night, law enforcers arrested Urmi’s father Nazrul Islam, mother Amena Begum, and brother-in-law Kamal Hossain. During interrogation, they confessed to the killing. On Wednesday, the three were produced before a court, where they gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

According to police, Urmi had been in a relationship with a local youth, which her family strongly opposed. On the night of August 20, around 1:30 am, a heated altercation broke out at home over the issue. At one point, the enraged family members strangled Urmi to death. Later, her parents and brother-in-law dumped the body in the nearby canal.

Multiple police units joined the investigation, which ultimately revealed the involvement of the victim’s own family members.
