Two cops suspended over Rokeya University student Abu Sayed murder

An assistant sub-inspector and a constable of the police have been suspended over the killing of Abu Sayed, a student at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, during unrest related to the quota reform protests on July 16.

They are ASI Amir Hosain and constable Sujan, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman told the media on Saturday.

They were accused of their unprofessional behaviour, negligence in discharging duty and violation of legal order given by the high-ups.

However, the police in a  the first information report (FIR) of a case he filed regarding the killing said that Abu Sayed died due to bullets shot by the anti-quota protesters.

The police formed a four-member committee led by Additional Commissioner Saifuzzaman Faruki to investigate the incident.

After the committee submitted an interim report and based on the findings, they were suspended on Thursday.

Further action will be taken after receiving the full report of the investigation team, Moniruzzaman  said.

On July 16, protesters marched five kilometres through the city to Begum Rokeya University, with Sayed joining them.

Clashes erupted with quota supporters, and police fired rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Despite the chaos, Sayed stood firm, refusing to budge. At one point, he was shot in the chest and fell to the ground.

He was immediately taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.

A 16-year-old was arrested and sent to Rangpur jail in the case filed over Abu Sayed‍‍`s killing.

However, a Rangpur court on Thursday granted bail to a the teenage boy.

The 11th-grader of Rangpur Police Lines School and College was arrested on July 16. He was later accused of the murder of Abu Sayed on July 17.
