A leader of the Sramik League, a labor wing of the Awami League, has passed away while being held at Gazipur District Jail.
The individual who died is Sheikh Jahirul Islam Zahir, from Sindighi village in the Maona union of Sreepur upazila.
According to family members, Jahirul served as the general secretary for the Sramik League in the Sreepur upazila unit.
At 9:00 PM last night, Mohammad Rafiqul Quader, the superintendent of Gazipur District Jail, informed the media that Sheikh Jahirul Islam Zahir had died at 5:20 PM while receiving treatment at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital.
The jail superintendent indicated that Jahirul had been sent to Gazipur District Jail on December 6, following a court order about a murder case.
He reportedly fell ill suddenly at 4:40 PM while in jail and was taken to the hospital for care.
Rafiqul mentioned that the procedure for transferring the body is currently in progress.
The father of the deceased, Mujibur Rahman, along with his brother, is also currently incarcerated.
When questioned about the charges leading to his arrest, Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Joynal Abedin Mondal stated, "We will need to review the case documents before we can provide any information."
