The Election Commission (EC) invited the BNP for an informal meeting rather than a formal discussion, according to Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Tuesday.
The CEC stated that the BNP might participate in informal discussion rather than formal dialogue and that's why they received an invitation letter.
He said these while talking to reporters at a press briefing at the EC Secretariat in the capital.
"We have not invited them for dialogue. Dialogue is a formal matter,” he said.
The CEC delivered a demi-official letter to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir earlier on Thursday for attending a meeting to exchange opinions on the upcoming national election.
The Awal-led Current EC has undertaken two rounds of talks with the political parties. BNP and a few other political parties, however, chose not to take part in the talks.
On Saturday, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of BNP claimed that the letter from EC inviting BNP to talks was nothing more than the government's most recent plan to stage another election without allowing the people to exercise their right to vote.
