Dhaka University Sociology Department professor AKM Jamal Uddin has proposed to extend the term of the current parliament and government for another five years without elections since the present government could not perform its duties properly due to Covid-19 pandemic.
The Pro-Awami League teacher, opined this from a human chain formed by the Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) on Monday afternoon in front of Aparajeyo Bangla on the university campus protesting against the threat to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by a BNP leader of Rajshahi.
He said that the national parliament could not function properly for two years due to the Covid-19 crisis. At that time none of the government, people and various institutions could function properly and the country was not properly managed, Jamal added.
Therefore, it is necessary to extend the term of parliament and government by five years. However, if for some reason five years is not possible, the term of government and parliament can be extended by at least two years, the DU professor told the human chain.
Among others, Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, President of DUTA presided over the program while its general secretary Zeenat Huda, DU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman, Pro-VCs Muhammad Samad and ASM Maksud Kamal, Treasurer Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, Former General Secretary of DUTA M Wahiduzzaman, Former Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences Sadeka Halim, incumbent Dean Zia Rahman, Syndicate Member Abul Mansur Ahmed spoke at the program.
