Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said that the reason behind suspending the bypoll to Gaibandha-5 (Saghata-Phulchari) constituency is unclear to the party.
He said: "The decision of the election commission (EC) to suspend the election by watching videos from 500 kilometres away is questionable as well."
He said this while addressing a programme in the capital city’s Mohammadpur area on Thursday.
The Road Transport and Bridges minister also raised questions about rationality of the election commission’s decision to suspend the by-elections by watching photos and videos from Dhaka.
He said: "I would humbly request the election commission to consider whether it is logical, practical and or legal to take decisions watching photographs and videos footage sitting in Dhaka.”
He said: "Almost all the presiding officers unanimously said the voting was free and fair. There was no chaos at the centres"
And that's why the people are claiming that the decision of the commission is questionable, he added.
Noting that the voting was suspended at the order of the election officer and the assistant returning officer, he hoped that the election commission would take appropriate measures in holding free, fair and credible elections.
