Mamata Banerjee has lost the Bhabanipur Assembly seat to Suvendu Adhikari in the West Bengal elections, in a major setback for the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the seat by more than 15,000 votes after a close contest.

Banerjee had taken an early lead during counting, but the gap narrowed gradually as results came in, and she eventually fell behind.

This is the second time Adhikari has defeated Banerjee in an Assembly election, after his win in Nandigram in 2021.

Meanwhile, early trends suggest the BJP is heading towards a strong victory in the state, with leads in over 200 seats.

Voting for the election was held in two phases in April.

Banerjee has alleged irregularities in the counting process and accused authorities of favouring the BJP.

She urged her party workers to remain at counting centres and stay alert as results were being finalised.

Officials have not yet responded to the allegations, and counting is ongoing.
