State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said that both his party and the country won Sunday’s election as the people exercised their franchise amid sabotage.

“Those who voted despite obstacles have proved that the people have rejected subversive activities in the country. The vote was a strong answer to poll violence and sabotage. So, not only the Awami League, but Bangladesh won it,” he said.

He made the comments on Sunday night after he was declared unofficially victorious from the Dinajpur-2 constituency.

It translates into his fourth straight victory as an Awami League candidate for the House since 2008.

Terming the election a free and fair one, Khalid said, “I’m thanking the people of my constituency for voting me to the office again.

“We’ve completed a successful election. I thank all residents of the Bochaganj upazila. Many of you came here to cast your ballots despite being residing far away. So, I’m thankful to you too,” he said.

Expressing his gratitude to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he said, “On this day, I remember the great leader and others martyred on August 15, 1975.”

He went on to say that the election was all about self-honor.

“The prime minister gifted us such a beautiful election despite being in power – a rare feat in the country’s history. If a party embodies an honest intention, it is possible to hold a successful election, which has been proved in today’s (Sunday) polls,” he said.

Vested quarters both at home and abroad tried to take advantage of the election, the state minister said.

“They are always busy creating unrest. But the people of Bangladesh preferred festivity to turmoil, thus, helping hold the election so peacefully amid adversities,” he maintained.

Khalid bagged 189,120 votes while his nearest contender -- independent candidate Anwar Chowdhury – just 10,359 votes.
