At least 13 Bangladeshi fishermen were reportedly abducted by members of the Arakan Army while fishing in the Naf River in Teknaf Upazila on Saturday morning.

The incident took place near Shah Porir Dwip when a group of armed men on speedboats chased several fishing boats in the Naikhyongdia area and took away 13 fishermen along with three engine চালিত boats.

The abducted fishermen are residents of Majher Para and Donger Para villages of Shah Porir Dwip. Local fishermen who managed to return safely shared details of the incident.

Abdul Gafur, president of Shah Porir Dwip Paschim Para Fishermen Association, said the attack happened around 7:00am near Gholarchar, close to the Bangladesh-Myanmar border area.

Local representative Abdul Mannan of Sabrang Union Parishad said fishing in the Naf River has become increasingly dangerous due to frequent activities of the Arakan Army in the area.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Enamul Hafiz Nadim, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Teknaf, said no formal complaint has been filed yet. However, he assured that law enforcement agencies are working to ensure the safe return of the abducted fishermen.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among local fishermen who rely on the river for their livelihood.
