When many national sports icons of Bangladesh kept mum about the recent violence centering on the quota reform movement, an Argentine footballer raised his voice for the students protesting in the country.
Sharing a generic photo on his official Facebook page on Saturday afternoon, Enzo Jeremías Fernández, better known as just Enzo, wrote, "To all my Bangladesh followers. I hear you and I also pray for you."
The 23-year-old midfielder, also representing Chelsea, garnered a mounting response to the post, with Bangladeshis welcoming his statement.
Uploaded at Bangladesh time 4:13pm, the post received almost 230,000 reactions and more than 35,000 comments in a little over four hours.
Facebook user Eshan Arif wrote, "Thanks dear. You so much better than our Bangladeshi so called celebrity. Take love from Bangladesh."
Another Bangladeshi, Mia Roman, said, "You win my heart. Take respect from Bangladesh. Pray for Bangladeshi students."
On Thursday, Jamal Bhuiyan, the captain of Bangladesh national football team, said that he supports the ongoing student movement.
However, dubbed national heroes, Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, two former skippers of Bangladesh national cricket team, are yet to make any statement involving the movement.
